Nicole is an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Children’s Health Policy Centre (CHPC) in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University-Harbour Centre (SFU). Nicole holds the Canada Research Chair Tier 2 in Child Health Equity and Policy. She is an instructor in health sciences, while also mentoring graduate students and a team of research trainees/associates. Through her research program, Nicole is committed to centering and amplifying the voices of children and families experiencing disadvantage and informing policy to advance health equity.
A bi-racial woman, born and raised in rural Scotland, Nicole has not followed a traditional career path. She moved to Toronto for an informal ‘gap’ year prior to pursuing her MSc at the University of Toronto. After seven years in research management roles, she obtained her PhD in Human Development, Learning and Culture in the Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia. She then pursued her post-doc at SFU, prior to joining CHPC in 2012 as a University Research Associate-Scientific Director co-leading a 10-year, $6.9M research initiative to prevent child maltreatment.
Nicole is grateful to live and work on the longstanding territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), Səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations, on lands now called Vancouver. She loves doing handstands.
